Update on the mare that shocked us all!

Dear friends, we felt the need to inform you about the mare's story because, on the one hand, what she experienced is tragic and inhumane, and on the other hand, we see the great interest of all of you in the course of her health and we thank you very much to all those who are trying to contribute in any way they can.

The story began last Sunday when the police called us and informed us that they had found a horse near a Roma camp, in very bad condition, asking us to attend and help it in any way we could.

On Monday morning (17/2/2025) we set off for the location we were told was in an area near Tripoli airport. Fortunately, the police had managed to lead the mare to a fenced area, so it was certain that we would be able to find her without her having already disappeared on her own.

We arrived at the scene with 3 people from our club and 2 veterinarians from the Veterinary Service of Arcadia. The mare was very scared and it was obvious how much pain she was in, she was running around the (fortunately) fenced area constantly, making it difficult for us to convince her that we had come for good. If it had not been a fenced area we would have had no hope of catching her as she would have definitely moved away as quickly as she could…

After 3 to 4 hours we managed to immobilize her and show her that we want her well! We removed the halter that had been worn on her when she was still a small foal and as she grew it was getting into her skin. We estimate that she is now about 4 years old, so she has been tortured for at least 2 to 3 years…

After the halter was removed, we led her to our truck so we could transport her to our club's accommodation area. Cleaning the wounds is a crucial step in creating optimal conditions for the smooth healing process.

After her arrival at our accommodation, we provide her with all necessary medical care with the help of a resident physician from the Animal action GreeceWe follow the horse doctor's instructions, daily cleaning, antibiotics, regenerative cream.

These days that we have her with us, she seems quite fearful, she does not trust us yet 100%, but we believe that very soon we will win her over. She is in good condition and eats normally. For now, she is in a place alone so that her wounds can heal, without fear of getting infected.

Don't worry, we hope everything goes well and he will soon integrate with the other horses!

We want to take this opportunity to thank you very much for your interest and the help you have already offered. Our mare will need time to heal but we are quite optimistic!! We apologize that we cannot answer all your comments and questions, but please know that we are doing everything humanly possible to help as many animals as we can. If you would like to help with the care and food needs of all these animals or even our beloved mare, you can to donate here.
